For many years, the Aero Club of Ostrów Wielkopolski is an organizer of a series of sporting events organized at the Michałków airport. This place was also used to organize recreational and cultural events for residents of the Kalisz-Ostrów Wielkopolski agglomeration and surrounding areas. We would like to return to this tradition. Therefore, we plan to organize an Aviation Festival 21-22, May 2011 under the slogan "Airport closer to the city". Co-organizer of the Festival is the Governor of Ostrów Wielkopolski region.
Objectives of the event is to present the history and achievements of the Aero Club of Ostrów Wielkopolski to the visitors, to awaken a passion for air sports in youth, and to popularize aviation within the local society in our region. During the festival there will be various activities and entertainment for children and adults alike. Organizers plan to present to the audience a regular day at the airport during which will be flying: gliders, airplanes, helicopters, radio controlled models, paragliders, paramotors, balloons and also skydiving and trainings of aerobatics groups.
Ostrów Wielkopolski has a long tradition of aviation, and during many years reached significant achievements. In our region the plane "Ostrovia" was built by the master builder Joseph Morrison and his assistants Joseph Nawrot and Edmund Morrison. We have invited builders of replica of the "Ostrovia" airplane to showcase the restored aircraft at the festival. The greatest ace of World War I Manfred Freiherr von Richthofen, which earned the nickname "Red Baron", has also his roots in our region. In more recent times, many glider and airplane pilots flying in the Aero Club of Ostrów Wielkopolski, and R/C modelers represented our a city and the region. They have won Polish Championship titles and were representing our country at international events.
As organizers we have a very much hope that a return to the tradition of organizing the May Picnics at the airport in Michałków, will meet with nice response and approval of all residents of Ostrów Wielkopolski, as well as surrounding cities.
